Hypnosis For Pain Relief

April 14th, 2010

For women with breast cancer, hypnosis can aid in alleviating the pain and discomfort associated with breast cancer treatment, according to a new Buffalo School of Social Work study.

Among 124 women with metastatic breast cancer, those assigned to a treatment group receiving instruction and practice in hypnosis and group psychotherapy were better able to moderate their pain symptoms. They reported, “significantly less increase in the intensity of pain and suffering over time,” compared with a control group that did not receive hypnosis training.

“The experience of pain and suffering for patients with metastatic breast cancer can be successfully reduced with an intervention that includes hypnosis in a group therapy setting,” says Lisa Butler, an associate professor in UB’s School of Social Work and lead study author.

Within the hypnosis treatment group, those patients who could be hypnotized more easily, demonstrating “high hypnotizability,” reported greater benefits from hypnosis. These patients used hypnosis more overall, including outside of the group sessions, and to alleviate other symptoms related to their cancer.

“There may be a number of benefits to the use of hypnosis in cancer including, but not limited to, its more traditional application for pain control,” says Butler. “These results support the use of hypnosis as an adjunctive treatment for patients experiencing pain.” The study appears in a recent issue of the American Psychological Association’s journal Health Psychology.

Hypnosis can also relieve pain associated with a wide range of conditions, including:

·      Arthritis pain.

·      Chronic back pain.

·      Fibromyalgia pain.

·      Headache and migraine pain.

·      Neck and shoulder pain.

·      Knee and hip pain.

In addition to hypnosis, acupuncture can effectively treat many acute and chronic pain conditions. One of the primary reasons individuals receive acupuncture is to alleviate pain relating to an illness or ailment.

Acupuncture provides pain relief, improves function and can serve as a primary therapy or complementary treatment to standard care.
