EIGHT SYMPTOMS OF STRESS: FATIGUE

March 20th, 2008

Fatigue may be due to environmental causes such as improper diet, inadequate rest, and work and home stressors or may result from health conditions including: Low blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, anemia, and viral and bacterial infections, among others. There is no defined therapy or standard treatment for fatigue. Conventional therapies emphasize reduced stress, overexertion prevention, stretching, dietary modification, and nutritional supplementation.

Many symptoms of fatigue, such as musculoskeletal pain, cognitive impairment, headaches, and sleep disturbances can be effectively treated with acupuncture. Acupuncture can enhance vital energy, increase lymph circulation, nourish blood, and strengthen a weakened immune system. Acupuncture can also work in conjunction with allopathic medications by improving mood and stabilizing disordered sleep cycles.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) uses a combination of acupuncture, moxibustion, Chinese herbal medicine, and lifestyle changes (diet, exercise) to treat fatigue. Acupuncture points selected during acupuncture for fatigue treatment address the root of the problem, such as qi blockage or deficiency, while other selected points reduce occurrence of specific symptoms, such as headache. The potential benefits of acupuncture for fatigue may include: Less pain, relaxation, improved overall health, and immune system boost.

A series of weekly treatments for four to six weeks is recommended followed by progress assessment, to reduce fatigue levels and increase functional capacity. Your acupuncture physician may recommend an additional series of acupuncture for fatigue treatments to normalize and balance the immune system in cases of chronic fatigue syndrome. Chronic fatigue syndrome is the current name for a disorder characterized by debilitating fatigue and a variety of associated physical, constitutional and neuropsychological symptoms.

In addition to acupuncture therapy, Chinese herbal formulas that act as circulatory stimulants may be recommended to offset the symptoms of fatigue. For more information about acupuncture for fatigue call Dr. Richard Browne, Acupuncture Physician and Homeopath, at (305) 595-9500.
