ACUPUNCTURE FOR INFERTILITY
September 8th, 2008
Acupuncture is a safe and natural therapy for the treatment of infertility. Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) enhance general as well as reproductive health. Acupuncture for infertility treatment addresses stress levels, emotions, sleep patterns, energy levels, and digestion. Acupuncture can improve whole body system functioning, which creates an optimal environment for maintaining a full term pregnancy.
Many infertility-related conditions can be effectively treated with acupuncture, including: Uterine fibroids, hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, amenorrhea, unexplained infertility, and recurrent miscarriage. Research has indicated that a large percentage of patients seeking treatment at fertility clinics use complementary therapies, such as acupuncture, in addition to allopathic fertility therapies.
Stress associated with conventional fertility treatments can be alleviated with acupuncture. In women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF), acupuncture can aid in increasing ovarian function as well as rate of pregnancy. Acupuncture can increase energy and reduce the side effects of hormonal therapies. For women who choose not to use fertility medications, acupuncture can stimulate egg production and can increase blood flow to the uterine cavity, which can aid in implantation.
Acupuncture for female infertility is a holistic treatment that addresses the particular imbalance of each individual. Many of the complex physical and hormonal imbalances which can lead to reduced fertility or infertility are treatable with acupuncture. Acupuncture regulates the body’s system, which balances hormonal levels and aids in increasing blood circulation to the reproductive organs.
Reproductive health can be improved in many ways with acupuncture:
∑ By balancing hormonal levels, acupuncture can regulate menstruation and ovulation
∑ Acupuncture can increase blood flow to the uterus, resulting in thickening of the endometrial lining, which is necessary for implantation
∑ Acupuncture can increase follicle production by stimulating blood flow to the ovaries
∑ Acupuncture strengthens overall health and enhances well being by providing a boost to the immune system.
Acupuncture stimulates chi (vital energy) flow as well. By improving chi flow, energy blockages which can lead to infertility, as well as other malfunctions and illnesses, can be effectively removed. Acupuncture can also improve fertility by redistributing the body’s chi, moving chi to areas that are energy deficient.
Acupuncture therapy for infertility requires treatment once or twice weekly. It takes a minimum of three consecutive cycles (12 to 24 treatments) to regulate hormonal levels. A tailored treatment plan for infertility may include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, lifestyle modifications, and nutritional recommendations.
