Homeopathic Medicines May Reduce Cancer Therapy Side Effects

Over a third of cancer patients seek out complementary therapies to reduce the discomfort of cancer therapy side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, and dermatitis. A recent Cochrane review assessed the effectiveness of homeopathic medications to treat these adverse side effects.

Studies included in the 644-participant review examined homeopathic medicines for the treatment of side effects in patients having radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The review appears in the recent edition of the publication The Cochrane Library.

Two homeopathic medications were found to have positive results—calendula ointment and Traumeel S, a formulaic combination of homeopathic medicines. Calendula ointment applied topically was found to reduce the dermatitis, or skin irritation, often associated with radiotherapy treatments for breast cancer. Traumeel S used as a mouthwash effectively treated stomatitis, an inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth caused by chemotherapy.

“We found preliminary data that suggest there may be benefit associated with these two homeopathic medicines in specific circumstances, although these results need to be replicated in further studies,” says Dr Sosie Kassab, Director of the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital’s Complementary Cancer Service and review lead author. “The effects of calendula may also depend on the formulation, as it can be prepared using a range of different methods.”

Of the homeopathic medicines assessed, none produced side effects or contraindications with conventional cancer treatments.

Homeopathy utilizes formulas that are nontoxic and have no side effects. Homeopathic medicines can be safely used as complementary medicines with most conventional treatments and medications.
