SAM-e for Health
July 27th, 2009
A naturally occurring compound, SAM-e can aid in stabilizing mood levels. SAM-e is formed from methionine, an amino acid found in foods that contain a high level of protein.
Formally referred to as S-adenosylmethionine, SAM-e is not a hormone or an herb, but a molecule produced by the body’s cells which aids in the regulation of gene expression and the preservation of fatty membranes that insulate cells.
SAM-e also regulates the action of serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, and melatonin, among other neurotransmitters and hormones.
Older people and those who experience low mood often have insufficient levels of SAM-e. These individuals can benefit and optimize their health by taking a SAM-e supplement to aid the body’s basic functions.
SAM-e can stabilize and elevate mood by improving brain cell activity if taken on a regular basis. SAM-e enhances mood by strengthening the impact of mood-boosting neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin.
A sufficient amount of SAM-e in the body can aid the functioning of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters by facilitating production of the receptor molecules they attach to or by speeding their molecular breakdown.
SAM-e can also make molecules such as existing receptors more responsive to mood-enhancing neurotransmitters. These molecules are located in the brain cells’ outer membranes. As these membranes become thick or congealed due to illness or age, the receptors lose their ability to respond to chemical signals or to move and change. By contributing to keeping the membranes of brain cells fluid and aiding the receptors in their mobility, SAM-e can elevate mood.
SAM-e has been shown to be as effective as pharmaceutical medications for the treatment of inflammation and pain. NSAIDs used for inflammation and pain often have adverse side effects, such as digestive tract damage and cartilage breakdown. SAM-e does not damage the digestive tract and can help to restore cartilage as well.
Pharmaceutical-grade SAM-e is available in two forms, tosylate and butanedisulfonate. SAM-e is absorbed through the intestine; SAM-e in the form of enteric coated tablets ensures protection of the stomach. Taking SAM-e twice daily, 400 mg a day, can be an effective dose for mood disorders, increasing the daily amount as required.
