L-Carnitine for Heart and Memory Health
July 23rd, 2009
L-carnitine improves heart health, memory, concentration, and focus. Easily absorbed, it enhances cardiovascular health, improves nerve cell function and provides antioxidant protection.
Similar to the nonessential amino acid carnitine, L-carnitine aids in metabolizing food into energy. Found in dairy products and red meats, it is synthesized in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine and is available as a natural supplement.
L-carnitine improves mental functions by enhancing nerve cell activity. In addition, it strengthens cardiovascular health by providing antioxidant protection and increasing cellular energy production.
By assisting transport of fatty acids into the cell for energy production, L-carnitine supports healthy cardiac enzyme levels, blood circulation and heart contractions. It acts as a strong antioxidant which can combat cell-damaging oxidative stress. L-carnitine also promotes healthy aging.
For athletes and those with regular exercise regimens, L-carnitine has been shown to increase muscle glycogen stores, reduce lactic acid build-up, maximize exercise endurance, strengthen resistance to muscle fatigue, and reduce post-workout recovery time. L-carnitine also can aid in weight loss by improving the body’s ability to oxidize fat for energy.
Acetyl L-carnitine is a form of carnitine which can improve memory and cognition in older people with age-related memory problems. It can also improve mental health and reduce pain in people with fibromyalgia.
As we age, levels of acetyl L-carnitine found in the brain, liver and kidneys decrease. Acetyl L-carnitine supplementation can replenish these deficiencies. Notable improvements in mental focus and cognition are the result.
Like L-carnitine, acetyl L-carnitine is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fats. Acetyl L-carnitine promotes weight loss by aiding the conversion of fats into energy and increases triglyceride metabolism.
By crossing the blood brain barrier more effectively than L-carnitine, acetyl-L-carnitine’s antioxidant properties can provide protection for neuron functioning. Acetyl-L-carnitine supplementation can positively affect mood and memory and can enhance energy production in the brain.
