Exercise And Reduced Carbohydrates For Weight Loss

March 24th, 2010

Many of the health benefits of aerobic exercise are due to the most recent exercise session, rather than weeks or months of exercise training. These health benefits are greatly affected by the food eaten after exercise.

“Differences in what you eat after exercise produce different effects on the body’s metabolism,” says Jeffrey Horowitz of the University of Michigan and author of a new Journal of Applied Physiology study examining exercise, diet and weight loss. “It’s very important to look at both the effects of exercise and what you’re eating after exercise.”

Health benefits of exercise are transient. One exercise session produces benefits to the body that taper off within hours or a few days.

Exercise enhances insulin sensitivity, particularly when meals eaten after the exercise session contain low carbohydrate content. Enhanced insulin sensitivity means that it is easier for the body to take up sugar from the blood stream into muscle tissues where it can be stored or used as fuel. Enhanced insulin sensitivity also aids in preventing weight gain.

In addition to exercise and a low carbohydrate diet, acupuncture can aid in permanent long-term weight loss. Acupuncture can:

·      Reduce the stress associated with weight loss.

·      Curb appetite.

·      Reduce hunger cravings.

·      Increase energy levels.

Acupuncture aids in regulating metabolism and can rebalance the digestive system. Acupuncture tonifies qi, or vital energy, and improves oxygen and blood circulation while producing a calming effect. Gradual changes in diet and exercise, combined with acupuncture treatment, can aid in weight management.
