Chinese Herbal Medicine And Pregnancy

Nearly 1 in 10 pregnant women in the U.S. utilize herbal products, according to a new CDC study. Usage is highest among women in the first three months of pregnancy.
For the study, data was assessed from 4,239 mothers who delivered with no major birth defects from 1998 to 2004. The study sample is believed to be representative of the 4.2 million births each year in the United States, indicating that over 9 percent of women use herbal products during pregnancy.
Herbal products most commonly used during pregnancy are herbal teas, ginger and chamomile, which have been shown to reduce morning sickness.
Herbal use was greatest among women older than 30 and with higher levels of education. Among the states reviewed, Utah had the highest rate of usage at 16.5 percent and Iowa the lowest at 5.4 percent.
