Treatments For Back Pain

March 22nd, 2010

General practitioners frequently treat patients experiencing low back pain in a manner that does not match health care endorsed by international clinical guidelines.

Low back is among the most frequent reasons for a general practitioner visit. A large body of medical literature on low back pain management, including trials and reviews, makes practical guidelines an efficient way for practitioners to base their care on the best evidence. These guidelines provide recommendations for assessment and management of low back pain.

“It is timely to consider how closely usual care aligns with guideline recommendations,” write Christopher Williams and colleagues from The George Institute for International Health, Australia, authors of a new report on back pain management appearing in JAMA’s Archives of Internal Medicine.

“Our findings show that key aspects of the usual care provided to patients do not align with the care recommended in international evidence-based guidelines,” the authors write. For example, although guidelines discourage the use of imaging, more than 25 percent of patients were referred for radiology, computed tomography or similar tests.

Less than 25 percent of individuals with back pain receive common pain-relieving medications, which are recommended during the initial care for back pain.

About back pain:

·      Up to 25 percent of adults experience low back pain.

·      Most individuals experience back pain at least one time in their lives.

·      The cause of back pain is unknown.

·      Back pain may become chronic, although most often is acute.

Acupuncture can be integrated into back pain management as a primary or complementary modality. With acupuncture, acute back pain often begins to improve after a few treatments. Chronic back pain care requires additional treatments according to individual constitution and cause and duration of the condition.
