Stop Smoking for Women

December 3rd, 2009

Women may be more susceptible than men to the carcinogens and substances in cigarette smoke, recent research indicates.

Kenneth Perkins, Ph.D., a professor at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, reviewed more than 100 studies on smoking cessation and found that women appear to suffer greater risks of smoking-related diseases than men and tend to have less success than men when they try to quit smoking.

Quitting smoking is more difficult for women than men. Studies reviewed by Perkins suggests women have more concerns than men about weight gain after quitting and are more susceptible to falling into old habits when faced with situations that trigger smoking.

Smoking contributes to both lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Women diagnosed with lung cancer or COPD tend to be younger than men who develop the diseases, although they smoke less. This could suggest that women are more vulnerable to the lung-damaging effects of smoking.

Research has identified a role for estrogen in increasing the lung cancer risk. Women and men also differ in the type of lung cancer they develop and the lung sites where the cancer occurs.

About 1 out of every 5 women in America smokes, and women are starting to smoke at younger and younger ages. Lung cancer affects more women every year than breast cancer, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health. Smoking can also increase the risk for heart attack, stroke, and osteoporosis.

In addition to counseling and anti-smoking strategies, acupuncture can aid in smoking cessation and staying nicotine free. Acupuncture can alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal including the jitters, irritability and restlessness that women often experience.

Most women discover greater energy and reduced appetite and food cravings after acupuncture treatment. While acupuncture may be utilized as a primary therapy for smoking cessation, it may also serve as a complementary therapy in conjunction with pharmaceutical aids such as nicotine patches and gum.

Exercise, dietary modification and Chinese herbal medicine may be recommended by your acupuncture physician to aid in cleansing the body of toxins and to prevent relapses.
