Smoking And Cardiovascular Health

Blood vessel function improves quickly shortly after smokers kick the habit, reducing the risk of heart disease, a new study indicates.
“Individuals who quit smoking have improved blood vessel function, even though they gain weight, which is a common side effect of smoking cessation,” says study author Dr. James Stein, an associate professor of medicine at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. “This confirms that quitting smoking is good for your blood vessels and reduces risk for heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.”
Assessing more than 1,500 people participating in a smoking cessation trial, doctors used ultrasound to examine the health of the brachial artery, the main upper arm artery, before and one year after the participants stopped smoking.
The relaxation capability of the brachial artery is associated with the capability of the heart’s arteries to relax and is an identifier for future risk of blood vessel and heart disease. Individuals who were able to quit smoking had a significant improvement in blood vessel function and brachial artery health, averaging a 14 percent lower rate of cardiovascular disease occurrence.
Health benefits of quitting smoking:
· Quitting decreases your risk of atherosclerosis and blood clots.
· Quitting can reverse heart and blood vessel damage.
· Can lower cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
· Enhances breathing capacity and lung function.
