Sleep Deprivation Common Among Americans
May 11th, 2010
The National Sleep Foundation’s (NSF) 2010 Sleep in America poll reveals Americans’ sleep habits and attitudes and examines the association between poor sleep and health problems.
The poll found that sleep disorders continue to be very common among the adults surveyed. “If you are experiencing problems sleeping, take charge of your own sleep,” says Thomas Balkin, Ph.D., chairman of the NSF. “You should critically examine your bedtime routines and pre-sleep activities and make time to ensure your bedroom is conducive to your sleep comfort.”
“You will spend approximately a third of your life in bed, so it’s worth it to take time to make sure your bed and bedtime routine are right for you. If you continue having problems sleeping for more than a few weeks, it’s advisable to speak with your health care professional,” Balkin says.
Progress is being made with physicians and patients discussing sleep issues in regular office visits. But there is still a lot of work to be done to make sleep a routine part of physician-patient interaction.
For those who are having problems sleeping, it’s a good idea to consider whether your bedtime routines may be too alerting. The National Sleep Foundation suggests the following ways you can improve your sleep:
· Go to sleep and wake at the same time every day.
· Use bright light to manage your “body clock.” Avoid bright light in the evening and expose yourself to sunlight in the morning.
· Remove work materials, computers and televisions from your bedroom.
· Exercise regularly, but avoid vigorous workouts close to bedtime.
Acupuncture can effectively reharmonize a disturbed sleep-wake cycle and has a calming effect on the nervous system. For individuals experiencing insomnia and other sleep disorders, acupuncture can promote deeper breathing and better sleeping patterns while decreasing acute and chronic pain that may cause sleep difficulties.
Acupuncture can correct imbalances causing the sleep disorder and increases production of serotonin, a chemical in the brain that aids sleep.
