Qigong Therapy for Osteoarthritis

July 20th, 2009

Qigong, a traditional Chinese medicine practice of breathing and movement exercises, can help to treat osteoarthritis when utilized as a complementary treatment. Traditional forms of Qigong consist of focused intention, physical movement and mind-body integration to enhance vitality and health.

According to a study conducted at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey by Kevin Chen, Ph.D., and Adam Perlman, MPH, Qigong can reduce pain and improve functionality in individuals experiencing knee osteoarthritis. The study appears in a recent edition of Clinical Rheumatology.

Exercise is the most effective non-drug treatment for improving movement and reducing pain in osteoarthritis. Stretching and Qigong exercises move joints through their full range of motion and can reduce stiffness. Doing Qigong exercises daily can help to maintain flexibility.

Health benefits of regular Qigong practice include: Improved balance, increased strength, reduced stress, lowered blood pressure, and slower respiratory rate. Individuals experiencing osteoarthritis are increasingly utilizing Qigong and other complementary and alternative medicine therapies to treat their condition.

Qigong may be an effective complementary treatment for osteoarthritis,” says Perlman, Executive Director of the UMDNJ-Institute for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. “Given the limitation and potential adverse effects of drug intervention of osteoarthritis, Qigong therapy might prove to be a valuable option as a supplement to conventional treatment.”

For the study, two Qigong therapists utilized Qigong to help direct Qi, or vital energy, in study participants. Significant pain reduction and improved functionality were reported by the majority of participants.

The researchers indicated that the participating healers produced various outcomes in the participants’ level of pain, range of motion and functionality.
