Meditation And Acupuncture For Insomnia

October 19th, 2009

Meditation can be an effective therapy for the treatment of insomnia, according to a recent study presented at SLEEP 2009, the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.

For study participants who used meditation, results indicated improvements in total sleep time, total wake time, sleep quality, and sleep efficiency. Insomnia is believed to be associated with the condition of hyperarousal.

Participants were divided into two groups for two months. One group received instruction in kriva yoga meditation and the second group received health education about nutrition, exercise, weight loss, and stress management.

Participants with chronic primary insomnia who were taught meditative relaxation techniques during the daytime experienced improved nighttime sleep patterns.

Nearly 70 million Americans, or 25 percent of the population, experience sleep disorders. Insomnia is a common health condition that may manifest itself as persistent sleepiness despite sleep of adequate duration (non-restorative sleep), early morning awakenings (sleep offset insomnia), difficulty falling asleep (sleep onset insomnia), or frequent awakenings (sleep maintenance insomnia).

For people who find conventional therapies to be ineffective in treating their sleep disorders, acupuncture can be an effective, holistic therapy option.

Acupuncture and meditation used in conjunction can treat both transient and chronic insomnia. Acupuncture improves sleeping patterns and promotes deeper breathing. Acupuncture can correct the imbalances causing insomnia without adverse side effects and increases production of certain chemicals in the brain, including serotonin, which appear to aid sleep.

Acupuncture can aid in re-harmonizing an imbalanced sleep-wake cycle and can reduce chronic pain that may exacerbate insomnia. Acupuncture can also treat health conditions that may be associated with sleep difficulties, such as digestive disorders, stress, hormonal imbalances, cardiovascular conditions, fibromyalgia, allergies, sciatica, and neurological disorders.

Treatment for insomnia may incorporate acupuncture with other complementary and alternative therapies that can aid in sleep difficulties, such as Chinese herbal medicine, tui na, qigong, and dietary modification.
