Medication For Pain Management

April 30th, 2010

Non-traditional therapies, such as acupuncture, acupressure and massage therapy can reduce pain by as much as 50 percent among hospitalized patients, as shown by findings from a new study appearing in the Journal of Patient Safety.

An inpatient integrative medicine program which incorporates non-traditional therapies can have a significant impact on pain in an environment where pain management continues to be a major challenge, and traditional medications can have adverse effects.

“Roughly 80 percent of patients report moderate to severe pain levels after surgery,” says Gregory Plotnikoff, M.D., one of the study authors and medical director of the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

“We struggle to provide effective pain control while trying to avoid the adverse effects of opioid medications, such as respiratory depression, nausea, constipation, dizziness, and falls.”

Acupuncture and other non-traditional therapies have previously been shown to effectively manage pain in cancer and surgical patients; the current data shows these therapies effectively manage pain across numerous patient populations, including cardiovascular, medical, surgical, orthopedics, spine, rehabilitation, oncology, and women’s health.

Integrative approaches to pain management during the hospital stay can improve patient satisfaction and outcomes while reducing dependence on pain medication.

Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of pain associated with a wide range of health conditions.

Acupuncture can:

·      Treat chronic joint pain.

·      Improve fatigue and anxiety.

·      Decrease stiffness and swelling.

·      Induce muscle and tendon relaxation.

·      Improve blood circulation.

Individuals experiencing acute and chronic pain conditions often show significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life compared to those who receive routine conventional care alone.
