Flexible Treatment Improves Anxiety Symptoms

Flexible treatment options for individuals with anxiety disorders that allow for a choice of cognitive therapy, medication, or both, results in greater improvement in anxiety symptoms and functional disability compared to usual care, according to a new Journal of the American Medical Association study.

The four most common anxiety disorders—panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder—were examined to assess whether a flexible treatment delivery intervention would be better than usual care  in reducing symptoms as well as improving health-related quality of life and quality of care delivered.

“Improving the quality of mental health care requires continued efforts to move evidence-based treatments of proven efficacy into real-world practice settings with wide variability in patient characteristics and clinician skill,” says lead author Peter Roy-Byrne, M.D., of the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Patients in the intervention group had significantly lower measures of anxiety symptoms. Flexible treatment options can accommodate the complexity of clinical settings within a broad range of patients, clinicians and practice settings.
