Chronic Pain And Prescription Drug Abuse

Individuals experiencing chronic pain are often undertreated as physicians increasingly fail to provide effective pain management treatment, either due to inadequate training, personal biases or fear of prescription drug abuse, according to Kathryn Hahn, a pharmaceutical expert.
Hahn, a researcher in pain management from the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University, believes consumers must become more informed advocates for the health care they require.
In recent years, pain management treatment has been affected by an increase in cases of stolen and misused drugs. “We do have to take steps to address prescription drug abuse but legitimate pain problems are not being managed,” Hahn adds.
Patients should cooperate with their health care providers on pain relief plans that may include a range of options, including alternative approaches such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care, meditation, exercise, or physical therapy.
Acupuncture effectively treats many acute and chronic pain conditions including: Back pain, joint pain, neuralgia, frozen shoulder, bursitis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, myofascial pain, and fibromyalgia. Acupuncture treatment for pain:
