Chinese Herbal Formulas and Heart Health

Chinese herbal formulas used for cardiovascular indications including heart disease may produce large amounts of artery-widening nitric oxide, according to new research at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Nitric oxide is crucial to the cardiovascular system because it signals the inner walls of blood vessels to relax, which facilitates the flow of blood through the heart and circulatory system. The messenger molecule also eliminates dangerous clots, lowers high blood pressure and reduces artery-clogging plaque formation.

“Chinese herbal formulas have profound nitric oxide bioactivity primarily through the enhancement of nitric oxide in the inner walls of blood vessels,” says senior study author Nathan S. Bryan, Ph.D.

Herbal formulas are a major component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which also includes acupuncture and massage. “TCM has provided leads to safe medications in cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” says C. Thomas Caskey, M.D. “The opportunity for Dr. Bryan’s work is outstanding given that cardiac disease is the No.1 cause of death in the United States.”

For the study, researchers performed tests on DanShen, GuaLou and other herbs to assess their ability to produce nitric oxide. Scientists also tested the capacity of the herbs to widen blood vessels. “Each of the herbs tested relaxed vessels to various degrees,” the authors stated. Chinese herbal formulas used for cardiovascular indications are made up of three to 25 herbs.

Chinese herbal medicine uses more than 600 different herbs prescribed in different combinations to treat specific diseases. There are hundreds of classic formulas, composed primarily of herbs of plant origin. Chinese herbal formulas take into consideration the therapeutic effect of each herb as well as the combined effect of the herbs when processed together.

Chinese herbal medicine is used internally and externally. Internal formulas are prepared as powders, teas, extracts, and pills. External types include liniments, powders, extracts, pastes, and salves.

Your acupuncture physician may prescribe an herbal formula that enhances the energetic rebalancing efforts of your acupuncture therapy.

In addition to cardiovascular disease, Chinese herbal formulas are used to treat colds, anemia, back and knee ache, digestive disorders, fatigue, headaches, arthritis, and allergies, among other conditions.
