CAM Use Increasing For Individuals With Chronic Sinusitis
November 5th, 2009
An increasing number of individuals with chronic rhinosinusitis, also known as sinusitis, are choosing complementary and alternative therapies for symptom management, according to a recent study.
Researchers from the Head and Neck Surgery Foundation identified CAM usage in patients at a rhinology clinic with a prior diagnosis of rhinosinusitis, a group of disorders characterized by nose and sinus inflammation.
A questionnaire administered to 75 participants over an eight-week period gathered demographic information about a wide range of alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, aloe vera, and cod liver oil.
Findings indicated 65 percent of participants used CAM, and 30 percent used CAM for chronic rhinosinusitis.
Sinusitis is one of the most common medical conditions, affecting more than 30 million people annually. Allergy and viral infections can trigger sinusitis and sinus headache. Symptoms may include nasal congestion, pain, cough, toothache, ear infection, fever, and general fatigue. Sinusitis often develops from an upper respiratory infection (common cold) or an allergic reaction (hay fever).
Respiratory infections and allergic reactions can cause inflammation and swelling that prevents sinus drainage. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal therapy can improve symptoms of allergic and irritant sinusitis, including sinus headache and pain and can effectively clear the sinuses and relieve congestion. Acupuncture corrects the underlying imbalance in the body’s energy, and can prevent acute sinusitis from becoming chronic. A comprehensive treatment program combining acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, food therapy, and supplements can decrease inflammation, congestion, pain, constriction of bronchial passages, infection, and sensitivity to allergens.
