Alternative Therapies For Breast Cancer Patients

Complementary and alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, reflexology, diet supplements, and vitamins are popular therapies for women recovering from breast cancer, says Gwen Wyatt, a Michigan State University researcher who is working to create a support intervention for women in breast cancer treatment.

“Quality of life is a research priority as it pertains to breast cancer,” Wyatt says. “Patients link symptoms to quality of life; if you have to live with breast cancer, then let’s have the highest quality of life we can during the process and make it as humane as possible.”

Looking at five major CAM categories of therapies—biological, mind-body, manipulative and body, energy, and alternative medical systems–Wyatt found that 57 percent of women are using CAM therapies, and the sicker a woman is the more likely she is to use multiple therapies.

Wyatt intends to help women identify which therapies will be most effective for them. CAM therapies have gained widespread use in the past decade.

Key points about CAM therapies:

·      Approximately 38 percent of adults use some form of complementary and alternative medicine.

·      CAM practices are a frequently used component of Americans’ health care regimens.

·      A large percentage of individuals utilizing CAM therapies indicate dissatisfaction with conventional health care.

·      Individuals with holistic lifestyles are more likely to seek alternative medicine therapies.

Among CAM therapies, acupuncture has been proven effective in the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, low back pain, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, PMS, headaches, abdominal pain, and addiction, among others.

Acupuncture is often used as a primary therapy and is increasingly being integrated into combination treatment. Acupuncture is often utilized as a preventative form of medicine.
