Allergies May Cause Depression

Allergies may affect your mood, in addition to the usual sneezing, itching and coughing, according to a new study.

“Allergies make one more prone to worsening mood, cognition and quality of life,” says author Partam Manalai, M.D., from the department of psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. Findings indicate that allergies may cause depression in some individuals. “Depression is a very common disorder and allergies are even more common,” says Manalai.

Peak pollen levels during the spring and fall coincide with a greater number of individuals experiencing depression. To explore the link between allergies and depression, Manalai and his colleagues recruited 100 participants from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., who had depression. Half were allergic and half were not allergic to trees and ragweed pollen.

The participants were assessed during both high- and low-pollen seasons, and had their levels of IgE antibodies measured. These antibodies are an indicator of susceptibility to allergies.

“Individuals with mood disorders who are allergic to an aeroallergen experience a worsening in mood when they are exposed to the allergen,” says Manalai. “People who have both of these disorders might be more vulnerable to depression in peak pollen season. Treating those conditions might prevent them from having a depressive episode during high-pollen season.”

As a medication-free therapy, acupuncture effectively and safely treats allergies and their symptoms and can be utilized preventatively when allergic reactions are not occurring.

·      Prevent seasonal allergies, if treatment begins prior to the allergy season.

·      Decrease inflammation, congestion and constriction of bronchial passages.

·      Reduce itching and discharge.

Acupuncture can also decrease medication dependency and aid the body’s capacity to regulate antigen-antibody reactions. Acupuncture addresses the root cause of seasonal and perennial allergies by correcting the underlying immune system imbalance.
