Acupuncture Helps Dental Patients

May 18th, 2010

Acupuncture can aid in the treatment of dental anxiety, according to new research. One in 20 individuals experience odontophobia, severe anxiety about dentist visits and dentistry. Nearly a third of people have moderate anxiety due to dentist visits.

“We can offer patients a safe, fast treatment for their odontophobia,” says lead researcher Dr. Palle Rosted, from the department of oncology at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, England.

Conventional treatments for dental anxiety include sedation, tranquilizers and relaxation techniques, which can produce adverse side effects or be time-consuming. “Moreover, in some patients, the more traditional treatments are not sufficient,” says Rosted.

Twenty individuals experiencing dental phobia with moderate to severe anxiety participated in the study. Their anxiety was checked before and after five minutes of acupuncture and rated. The acupuncture treatment utilized two acupoints located on the top of the head.

Anxiety levels dropped significantly and the participants were able to complete their dental treatment. Before the acupuncture treatment, only six participants were able to endure even partial dental treatment and only at great effort by dentist and patient.

“Acupuncture has some advantages over other treatments,” says Rosted. “The treatment is safe and fast. The dentist could start dental treatment five minutes after insertion of the needles.” The results of the study have implications for acupuncture use for all preoperative anxiety to reduce stress levels.

Acupuncture helps release endorphins, which act as both painkillers and sedatives while contributing to a feeling of well being.

Acupuncture for anxiety:

·      Treats the entire body holistically.

·      Treats both emotional and physical components of anxiety.

·      Cultivates energy and combats fatigue.

·      Reduces heart rate and induces relaxation.
