Acupuncture for Stress and Emotional Ailments
July 17th, 2009
A recent British Acupuncture Council survey indicates that stress is affecting younger people most, with under-40s seeking acupuncture treatment for stress-related and emotional ailments such as depression, strain and anxiety.
Nearly 60 percent of those suffering from emotional and mental ailments are under 40. With individuals balancing economic and social pressures and working longer work weeks, many are finding it difficult to cope. The Council research indicates that the top three stress-related and emotional ailments for which acupuncture is sought are depression (18 percent), anxiety (13 percent) and insomnia (10 percent).
While one in six people develop depression, one in 20 becomes clinically depressed. Acupuncture and other holistic therapies are playing a role in the way individuals are choosing to treat their emotional and mental health conditions.
Many individuals cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressant medications. Traditional Chinese medicine treats specific depression symptoms that are unique to the individual using a variety of modalities such as acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, energetic exercises, and tui na massage.
Acupuncture can have beneficial effects for individuals experiencing anxiety, including decreased heart rate, lowered blood pressure, stress reduction, and increased energy. Acupuncture for anxiety selects acupoints during treatment which produce an immediate, regulatory effect on the nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system, which has a counterbalancing effect on the sympathetic nervous system, is stimulated so that the heart rate slows down and the body and mind can begin to relax.
Acupuncture is particularly effective in reharmonizing an imbalanced sleep-wake cycle. Acupuncture increases production of chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, that can aid sleep for those experiencing insomnia.
Acupuncture improves overall well being, rather than only addressing the symptoms of conditions. Acupuncture regulates the flow of vital energy, or Qi, throughout the body. Qi circulation stimulates the body’s healing abilities and helps restore natural balance.
