Acupuncture for Male Menopause
February 20th, 2009
Male menopause refers to the physiological, hormonal and chemical changes that men between the ages of 40 and 55 may experience. These changes, unlike those of female menopause, may be subtle and may not result in physical or psychological symptoms that affect energy levels, mood or sexual function.
Also known as androgen decline in the aging male (ADAM), late onset hypogonadism (LOH) and testosterone deficiency, male menopause involves a gradual decline in the male hormone production. Often, this reduction in testosterone levels is not noticeable until after the age of 60. While some men may experience symptoms and low testosterone levels others may maintain normal testosterone levels into old age.
Symptoms of male menopause may include: Hot flashes and sweats, reduced sexual function, tender breasts, shrinking testes, reduced strength and muscle bulk, loss of body hair, decrease in spontaneous erections, and infertility.
Men who experience significantly reduced testosterone levels may opt for testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). However, the benefits and health risks associated with TRT have not yet been determined.
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) can effectively treat male menopause with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. The goal of male menopause treatment is to slow down the aging process and preserve good health and quality of life.
Traditional Chinese medicine can support the physiological changes at this life stage by treatment of the meridian channel system which can aid in improving energy levels, sexual function, strength, and mood.
Acupuncture can increase qi (energy) in men experiencing male menopause. Acupuncture also focuses on treatment of the kidney meridian, which is associated with physiological symptoms men in midlife may experience such as back and knee problems.
These physical and psychological changes are often viewed as normal signs of aging. However, Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture can alleviate or reduce symptoms related to this transition as well as slow the aging process.
Acupuncture is a safe and natural alternative to testosterone replacement therapy for men who experience abnormally low levels of testosterone. Acupuncture can aid in balancing the hormonal deficiency and can enhance overall health and vitality.
In addition to acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, regular exercise and a healthy diet can be effective in maintaining energy, strength and muscle mass during midlife and aging.
