Acupuncture for Endometriosis

March 23rd, 2009

Acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can effectively treat endometriosis as well as a wide range of female health disorders.

Endometriosis is a condition in which the uterine lining cells grow outside of the uterus. Cell growth may occur on the lining of the pelvic cavity, the fallopian tubes or ovaries. Abnormal cell growth may also occur in the intestines, bladder, lungs, head, or arms.

Normal shedding of endometrial cells produces monthly menstruation or vaginal bleeding. This monthly cycle also occurs with the abnormal cell growth outside of the uterus. However, the endometrial tissue outside the uterus that sheds off monthly is absorbed by the body and can produce inflammation, pain, lesions, masses, and increased amounts of endometriosis.

Endometriosis affects five to seven million women between the ages of 30 and 40, according to the American Medical Association. Women who experience endometriosis often have excessive bleeding during their menses. Symptoms of endometriosis may include nausea, fatigue, intestinal upsets, vomiting, and low back pain during menstruation.

Allopathic medicine has not yet determined the cause of endometriosis. Diagnosis is determined through a laparoscopy, in which an incision is made in the naval to allow the abdominal cavity to be viewed with an optical tube. Conventional therapies include surgery and drug therapy.

The traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis for endometriosis is based on individual clinical manifestations in the individual, in which specific patterns indicate the condition and stage of the disorder. When treating the disorder, acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine considers cycle duration, pain and pain location and menstrual history.

From the traditional Chinese medicine perspective, endometriosis is caused by cold and heat conditions, energy deficiency and stagnation and blood stagnation. Other causes that may contribute to the development of endometriosis include chronic illness, constitutional instability, anxiety, stress, and surgical history.

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas can effectively treat the root cause of the condition as well as aid in symptom management. Acupoints selected during treatment may be located on the feet, legs, back, abdomen, and ears.

Chinese herbal formulas can increase and strengthen the flow of qi, or vital energy, in the body. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can reduce the pain associated with endometriosis by increasing endorphin levels (the body’s natural painkillers), strengthen blood circulation, decrease stagnation, and regulate the endocrine system. Acupuncture can also help maintain optimal health.
