Acupuncture for Digestive Disorders
November 6th, 2009
Acupuncture is often associated with pain management, but an increasing number of studies have shown its effectiveness in treating other health disorders.
The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of digestive and respiratory conditions, neurological and muscular disorders and urinary, menstrual and reproductive complications.
Acupuncture can treat common digestive disorders, such as peptic ulcer, acute and chronic gastritis, gastric spasm, heartburn, and inflammatory conditions. Acupuncture provides relief of gastric-related pain significantly better than medication. For gastrointestinal spasm, acupuncture is also more effective than conventional medicine.
A common symptom of digestive disorders is nausea and vomiting. This can be due to a stomach dysfunction, but it is more often a symptom or sign of generalized disorders. Morning sickness and postoperative vomiting are frequently encountered. For these conditions, acupuncture can have an antiemetic effect, protecting against nausea.
Digestive disorders such as chronic ulcerative colitis and irritable colon syndrome are often difficult to treat with conventional medication. For these conditions, acupuncture may serve as a complementary or alternative therapy.
Acupuncture can improve digestive disorder symptoms. Often due to chronic stress, digestive symptoms can be a result of endocrine and nervous system hyperactivity. Symptoms of digestive disorders acupuncture treats include: Concentration difficulties, fatigue, dry skin, hair loss, anemia, muscle cramps, low energy, and weight loss.
Specific acupuncture points increase gastrointestinal muscle contraction and relaxation and reduce gastric acid secretion, making acupuncture beneficial in treating general digestive symptoms.
Moxibustion, the burning of mugwort or other medicinal herbs on selected acupuncture points, may be utilized in conjunction with acupuncture for the treatment of digestive disorders. Moxibustion acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, tonifies deficient imbalances and is effective in the treatment of many digestive disorders.
In addition to acupuncture therapy, your acupuncture physician may recommend dietary modifications that incorporate more healthful foods which can aid in detoxifying and restoring the digestive system.
