Acupuncture And Pain Relief

Acupuncture has a significant effect on neural structures and pain processing in the brain, according to a new study from the University of York and the Hull York Medical School.

Understanding the effects of acupuncture on the brain may lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms of acupuncture and a greater acceptability of the treatment in conventional care for a wide range of health conditions.

Acupuncture deactivates areas within the brain that are associated with the processing of pain. Acupuncture for pain can treat:

·      Knee osteoarthritis.

·      Back, shoulder and neck pain.

·      Fibromyalgia.

·      Joint pain.

·      Sciatica.

In addition to regulating pain processing in the brain, acupuncture also treats pain by increasing the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers. Medication and physical therapy often utilized in standard care of acute and chronic pain conditions may not result in effective pain relief.

As a primary or complementary therapy, acupuncture can aid in pain management. Endorphins and other natural painkilling substances in the body can often be more potent at pain reduction than many prescribed medications.
