Acupuncture and Moxibustion

January 11th, 2010

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy which consists of burning sticks or cones of moxa (Artemisia vulgaris, or mugwort) on or beside an acupuncture point to restore the balance of yin and yang. Heat is often utilized in traditional Chinese medicine to treat yang energy deficiencies in the body.

The most common form of moxibustion is the indirect form. An acupuncture physician lights one end of a cigar-shaped moxa stick and holds it in close proximity to the skin to warm inserted acupuncture needles, bringing warmth to the area.

Burning moxa near acupoints causes localized vasodilatation, which increases blood circulation. Benefits of moxibustion include:

·      Increased production of white blood cells, which strengthens the defense system.

·      Stimulated flow of qi, or vital energy.

·      Boosts the immune system, which is beneficial for the treatment of internal disorders.

·      A holistic therapy for health maintenance.

When used in conjunction with acupuncture, moxibustion can effectively treat a wide range of conditions and ailments, such as: Tendonitis, back pain, digestive disorders, muscle stiffness, headaches, gynecological disorders, migraines, and arthritis.

Moxibustion expels cold and warms the meridians, or energy channels in the body. Moxibustion can improve quality of life by decreasing fatigue, improving appetite and sleep patterns and promoting relaxation. Moxibustion is a safe, painless and noninvasive therapy.
