Acupuncture’s Pain Relief Effects

Scientists have taken another important step toward understanding just how acupuncture can ease pain.

In a Nature Neuroscience study, University of Rochester Medical Center researchers have identified the molecule adenosine as playing a central role in the pain reducing effects of acupuncture in the body.

A natural component which regulates sleep, adenosine is known for its beneficial effects on the heart and for its anti-inflammatory properties. But adenosine also acts as a natural painkiller, becoming active in the skin after an injury to inhibit nerve signals and ease pain.

“Acupuncture has been a mainstay of medical treatment in certain parts of the world for 4,000 years, but because it has not been understood completely, many people have remained skeptical,” says lead author Maiken Nedergaard, M.D. “In this study, we provide information about adenosine as one physical mechanism through which acupuncture reduces pain in the body.”

Adenosine is very active in deeper tissues affected by acupuncture. In addition to adenosine as a pain-relieving component, acupuncture has been shown to create signals that cause the brain to produce natural, pain-killing endorphins in the central nervous system. Acupuncture also effectively reduces pain in the peripheral nervous system, the nerves in the body that aren’t part of the brain and spinal cord.

Acupuncture can reduce pain and discomfort by:

·      Inducing muscle and tendon relaxation.

·      Decreasing stiffness and swelling.

·      Strengthening functional ability.

·      Improving blood circulation.

Individuals with acute and chronic pain conditions, when treated with acupuncture, often show significant improvements in symptoms and quality of life compared to those who receive only routine conventional care.
