Acupuncture Treatment For Rhinitis

Acupuncture is a natural alternative treatment for rhinitis that is free of side effects and effective. Although symptomatic improvement may result from conventional antihistaminic therapy, acupuncture therapy can have a prolonged beneficial effect. Acupuncture not only reduces symptoms, but also treats the root cause of the disease and may prevent acute rhinitis from becoming chronic.

Pharmaceutical medications including decongestants, antihistamines and topical corticosteroids are available to treat sinus inflammation, congestion and other symptoms that accompany rhinitis. Conventional medications may offer temporary symptom management but cannot cure the condition and may cause adverse effects such as insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, gastrointestinal disorders, and nervousness. Acupuncture can clear the nasal cavity to restore breathing, reduce inflammation and alleviate general discomfort without unpleasant side effects.

Acupuncture strengthens the body’s immune system and benefits overall well-being. Therapy consists of stimulating various acupuncture points located on the wrists and around the sinuses to reduce nasal secretion while increasing natural healing abilities and regulating the body’s reaction to antigens. Treatment enhances flow of qi, the body’s vital energy. When qi flows freely the body performs at optimum health. Many patients benefit from reduced nasal congestion, discharge and itching following the first few acupuncture treatments.

For individuals experiencing seasonal allergic rhinitis, the ideal time to begin treatment is at least one month before symptoms typically occur. Treatment for allergic rhinitis may include acupuncture combined with moxibustion (burning of the mugwort herb on selected acupuncture points) to enhance symptom improvement. For year-round perennial allergic rhinitis and acute rhinitis conditions, a course of six to ten weekly treatments is recommended. Chronic rhinitis conditions may require longer treatment plans and maintenance therapy.

The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture for treatment of rhinitis. For more information about acupuncture therapy for rhinitis contact Dr. Richard Browne at (305) 595-9500.
